Illinois to end relationship with lottery vendor

CHICAGO (AP) _ Illinois is ending its contract with Northstar Lottery Group, the private vendor that operates the $2 billion-a-year state lottery.

Crain's Chicago Business reports (http://bit.ly/1m2FcAH) that Gov. Pat Quinn is dumping Northstar seven years earlier than scheduled.

Quinn spokesman Grant Klinzman tells Crain's the governor's office has directed the Illinois Lottery to end its relationship with Northstar. He says the administration had "serious concerns" with Northstar's performance.



The private lottery contractor has never reached the lofty sales promises it used to win a bid four years ago.

SINGAPORE, April 5 (Reuters) - Perennial Real Estate, a firm set up by the former head of CapitaLand's (CATL.SI) shopping mall business, plans to launch property funds that will buy malls in China and Singapore to tap the region's growing consumer demand.

Pua Seck Guan, who left CapitaLand in 2008, is making a comeback in the property fund management scene, drawing on his experience in helping build the Singapore developer's regional shopping mall business and floating off assets via real estate investment trusts (REITs).

Perennial just closed a 1.2 billion yuan ($176 million) Chinese shopping mall fund aimed at Chinese investors and it has started pre-marketing a similar fund aimed at international investors. Beijing Hualian Group, a large Chinese retailer, is a cornerstone investor in the yuan-denominated fund, he said.

"Particularly in China, there is a huge amount of opportunity. There is no shortage in the pipeline (and) we can still buy malls at good valuations," Pua, who is Perennial's CEO, told Reuters in an interview.



He downplayed risks of a bubble in Chinese retail property, noting it was possible to acquire malls in Beijing for 12,000 to 13,000 yuan per square metre compared with prices of around 20,000 yuan/sq m for residences outside the city centre.

China's retail sales were also growing at a clip of over 15 percent per annum, he added. [ID:nTOE628095]

Michael Kerley, a fund manager at Henderson Global Investors, said concerns about property price bubbles in China were overstated, noting the country's high savings rates, rural-to-urban migration and strong GDP growth.

"If property prices go up by 20 percent in London, that's a multiple of 5 times GDP. When they go up by 20 percent in China, it is only a 1.5 times multiple of GDP," Kerley said.

Similar to CapitaLand and other developers that have diversified into fund management, Perennial is directly involved in the design and management of the malls. In China alone, the firm employs about 450 people directly or through its partners.

"You need a platform to demonstrate you know the local market... We have anchor tenants who will follow us so we know what kind of rentals we can achieve. We are not the kind of fund manager who pluck numbers from the air," Pua said.

Chinese malls that the Perennial funds invest in will be divested to Shenzhen-listed Beijing Hualian Department Store 000882.SZ once the malls develop a track record and are able to deliver steady rental returns.

The Shenzhen firm, which now owns 24 malls, is in the process of being renamed to reflect its status as a REIT-like vehicle for investors seeking fairly high, predictable dividends with the possibility of capital appreciation if property prices increase.

Beijing Hualian Group is an anchor tenant at several China malls owned or managed by CapitaMalls Asia CMAL.SI, which was spun off by CapitaLand last year in a $2 billion initial public offering.

As for Singapore, Pua said Perennial hoped to raise a S$300 million ($214.7 million) to S$400 million fund that will invest in underperforming malls as well as develop new projects.

The firm has already led one investment, paying S$248 million for Katong Mall in one of Singapore's wealthy eastern suburbs. Food retailer Breadtalk (BRET.SI), which will be taking space at the mall after it is refurbished, was an investor in Katong Mall.

Pua, who is widely credited with building CapitaLand's malls business, resigned from Southeast Asia's biggest developer in September 2008, sparking a 7 percent fall in the firm's share price amid already uncertain market conditions which caused Singapore's benchmark index to fall 3.5 percent.

He is a civil engineer by training and holds a masters degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Many have speculated that she's actually referring to pro Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson, one of the new troupe members from "DWTS" season 18. While there are some fans who had already picked up on this pairing, it definitely snuck up on many. Though Val and Jenna haven't officially confirmed they are dating, photos from the post-finale celebrations in New York this week certainly make it seem as if it's happening.

Access Hollywood posted a cute picture of Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson together at TAO Downtown, where a group was with Maksim and Meryl celebrating. People shared a fun shot of Maksim, Meryl and Tony that also had Val and Jenna standing together from the same outing. Finding love no bed of roses for Chinese men

Finding one's better half can be a tricky business in modern-day China, with hectic work schedules, nagging parents and a gender imbalance conspiring to make selecting a partner a nightmare for single men.



According to the recent "2010 China Marriage and Relationship Survey Report," 260 million Chinese are looking for love - 180 million singles and 80 million concerned parents.

Eager singles swamped matchmaking events held in Beijing during the Chinese New Year holidays, with an estimated 50,000 people attending a week-long event in the capital's Ditan Park, according to organiser Jiayuan.com, a popular matchmaking website with over 40 million registered members.

"I am the third oldest in my family, and everyone has a girlfriend except for me," said 29-year-old insurance worker Chen Nan, who said he felt pressure to step up the search for a wife.

"Whenever there are get-togethers with university classmates and relatives they ask questions like 'Why don't you have a girlfriend' or 'Are you going to have one next year?' So there really is a lot of pressure," he said.

Men and women taking part in the event, mainly white-collar workers in their late 20s and early 30s, flirted and exchanged phone numbers and pieces of paper.

According to Jiayuan.com, over 70 percent of participants were in fact anxious parents hoping to fix up children too busy or shy to meet the opposite sex.

An army of 50-somethings browsed rows of sheets of paper strung up between trees showing singles' personal information, jotting down details.

Some compared details with other parents, held signs up promoting sons and daughters, or organised dates on their behalf.

"My son is very busy with work - not just busy, but extremely busy. He has to work overtime a lot and doesn't have opportunities to meet girls," said a woman who gave her name as "Mrs. Li" and had a 26-year-old son who was an IT worker.

"I don't know if he is worried, but I am quite worried. That's why when I saw the event, I rushed straight in."

The 30-year-old one-child policy has exacerbated China's gender imbalance, with the latest figures showing that 119 boys are born for every 100 girls.

As a result, more than 24 million bachelors could find themselves without spouses by 2020, according to a report from the Chinese Institute of Social Sciences, which attributed the imbalance to gender-selective abortions as a result of traditional preferences for male children.

Stressful relationships may raise risk of death

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Worries, conflicts and demands in relationships with friends, family and neighbors may contribute to an earlier death suggests a new Danish study.

"Conflicts, especially, were associated with higher mortality risk regardless of whom was the source of the conflict," the authors write. "Worries and demands were only associated with mortality risk if they were related to partner or children."

Men and people without jobs seemed to be the most vulnerable, Rikke Lund, a public health researcher at the University of Copenhagen, and her colleagues found.

The health-protecting effects of support from a social network and close connections with family and friends are widely recognized, Lund's team writes in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

"Less is known about the health consequences of stressful aspects of social relations, such as conflicts, worries and demands," they write.

To examine the influence of relationship stress on all causes of death, the researchers looked at data from a long-term study in Denmark. They included 9,870 adults in their 30s, 40s and 50s when the study began and tracked their health from 2000 to the end of 2011.

The researchers measured stressful social relations by comparing answers to questions about who - including partners, children, relatives, friends and neighbors - caused worry and conflicts in the participants' lives.

They also looked at answers to questions about emotional support and symptoms of depression.

During the study period, 4 percent of the women and 6 percent of the men died. Almost half the deaths were from cancer; other causes included cardiovascular disease, liver disease, accidents and suicide.

About one in every 10 participants said that their partner or children were always or often a source of demands and worries. Six percent said they always or often experienced conflicts with other members of their families and 2 percent reported always or often having conflicts with friends.

The researchers also found that 6 percent of participants had frequent arguments with their partner or children, 2 percent with other relatives and 1 percent with friends or neighbors.

People who always or often experienced worries or demands because of their partners had double the risk of dying compared to those who seldom had those experiences.

Participants who always or often experienced worries and demands from their children had about a 50 percent increase in risk of death.

Frequent conflicts also were linked to an increased risk of dying.

Participants who always or often experienced conflicts with their partners or friends had more than double the risk of dying, and if they argued with neighbors, the risk more than tripled.

Having conflicts or worries and demands, and not being part of the labor force was linked to a risk of death about 4.5 times that of a person without those problems.

"I think it really adds to our broader understanding of the influence of relationships, not only on our overall health, but on our longevity - how long we actually live," Julianne Holt-Lunstad told Reuters Health.

Holt-Lunstad, a psychology researcher at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, was not involved in the study.

"There are a couple of other studies that have shown that negativity in relationships actually is associated with greater risk of mortality, and this study looks specifically across different types of relationships as well and also looks at the gender effect which adds to our understanding," she said.

Hold-Lunstad explained that just like exercise and eating a healthy diet is good for health, fostering the positive aspects of a relationship can be protective.

"But not all relationships are equal - we need to be careful about the negative aspects as well," she said.

Holt-Lunstad doesn't want people to get the impression from this study that ending all imperfect relationships is the right thing to do.

"We know that social isolation is bad for us as well," she said. "They're probably both bad and that's why it might be important to foster the positive aspects rather than just focusing on cutting people out of your life."

NEW YORK May 22 (Reuters) - Nearly two decades since the start of online dating, the match-making sites that launched millions of relationships are spicing things up with online games and going high tech and offline to produce more happy ever afters.

Games, apps and offline events are beginning to replace the ritual exchange of online messages, the basic tenet of online dating, and to blur the distinction between on-and-offline dating.

Match.com, which boasts more than 1.7 million paid subscribers, has taken cues from the $74 billion global video gaming industry by creating short dual-player games to help people express themselves better online.

A game called Food Critic prompts members to answer food-related questions, while Romance Rip-Off is designed for two players to create a love story together. During the game players can instant message each other to discuss their answers, which Match.com believes promotes a more natural way of interacting.

"I don't think there's anything that's quite like this," said Mandy Ginsberg, the president of Match.com, which started in 1995.

Online dating has come a long way in the past 20 years. More than 40 percent of online daters, nearly 7 million adults, have dated people they met online, and 17 percent of them entered a long-term relationship or married their online partner, according to 2006 report by the Pew Research Center.

Brian Schechter, co-founder and co-CEO of HowABoutWe, said his company has been going offline to play Cupid since it started in 2010.

"We were the originators of the offline dating ethos."

Members of HowAboutWe post the type of dates they would like, such as a hike or a bike ride, and others respond. Schechter said nearly one million dates have been posted to HowAboutWe. The site's focus is what sets it apart, he added.

"Traditional dating sites were never focused on facilitating in-world experiences, as much as helping people express their identity online," Schechter said.

ALGORITHMS AND APPS

Other websites including OkCupid and Badoo are using smartphone apps so singles can discover if there are other members nearby whom they might like to meet.

Badoo, which has more than 150 million registered users worldwide, has a mobile app with a feature called People Nearby that allows users to see anyone on Badoo who is within a three mile (4.8 kms) vicinity.

"We're all about finding ways just to make it easy and non-initmidating to go out and meet new people," said Louise Thompson, Badoo's director of public relations. "It kind of adds that level of spontaneity that you don't get on traditional dating sites,"

Match.com is also planning to launch local customized events for members to foster offline meetings. Groups invited to the events are matched by algorithms incorporating age, gender and interests.

The company plans to host 200 events per month across the United States by September.

"I think we're going to be the largest events company in the world, with the exception of maybe the Olympics," Ginsberg said.

But not all dating websites are opting for meet-up apps and events.

EHarmony, which relies on an in-depth questionnaire about personality traits, said its method has been a success and cites the 542 marriages a day that it claims resulted from a meeting on its website.

"We know that it works very well," said Jeremy Verba, eHarmony's CEO, adding that offline eHarmony events would not work with the way does its compatibility matching.

"eHarmony is focused on getting our members to meaningful offline meetings with people who are deeply compatible," Verba said. "We are not about creating large scale happy hours."

Despite their different approaches the aim of all dating websites is the same -- getting compatible people together, offline.



"Online dating is a funny kind of misnomer, because people don't actually date online," Ginsberg said.

But Kent said she was shocked by the "racist" responses she got when other users learned she lived in Ramallah, and decided to gather screenshots of similar conversations her friends in Palestine had, and posted them on a blog.

Now the excerpts, which Kent says are all from her or her friends' personal conversations, are gaining traction online, highlighting how even something innocent like an online chat can spiral into heated political discussion.

In one conversation, someone claiming to be from Tel Aviv, Israel, refuses to visit Ramallah because he says he doesn't want to be killed. In another, someone assumes the other party is a Hamas supporter because she is in Palestine.

Yet another conversation brings up "Romeo and Juliet" -- a way to justify an Arab and a Jewish person speaking to one another.

Kent, who blurred names and faces before she posted the snapshots online, said the blog isn't designed to shed light on what dating life is like there, but just serves as further proof of how divisive the Middle East has become.

Online Dating to Find Dog or Cat Right For You

It's like online dating--except for people seeking dogs or cats or chinchillas or whatever else may be the pet perfect for them.

How much is the online experience like using eHarmony, say, or Match.com?

"It's exactly like using Match.com," says Darrell Lerner, who ought to know. Before he founded pet-finder site Allpaws.com (which currently has 82,960 pets awaiting adoption), Lerner co-founded SNAP Interactive, the developer of AYI (Are You Interested?), a dating application on Facebook with, he says, some 70 million installs.

Allpaws, says its website, "Takes online pet listing in a new and exciting direction by offering an online dating style interface complete with advanced search tools." Those include some 30 different search filters, Lerner tells ABC News. Adopters (we hesitate to call them "early adopters," although the site launched only this past January) can search by type of pet, breed, location, gender, age, size or friskiness. You can search for a bird who's great with children, a senior cat or a special-needs chinchilla. The site lists over 49,000 dogs, over 31,000 cats, 1,208 rabbits and 272 horses--not to mention 658 animals "small and furry," 79 that hail from the barnyard and 238 slitherers and other assorted reptiles.

Hedgehogs spike in popularity as pets

PuppyFind.com, as its name implies, matches puppy-seekers with breeders. "We're puppies-only," says Mike Peters, head of business development.

Peters tells ABC News the site lists some 50,000 puppies (from 300 different breeds), some priced as high at $3,000 per pup. The site makes money by charging breeders a flat fee. It exists only to connect buyers and sellers. From there on in, it takes no further role in the transaction.

The site, says Peters, was the target of scammers some years ago--people falsely claiming to be breeders, many doing business from overseas. They would list puppies for sale and collect the money. Then Fido would not be forthcoming.

Such scammers, in their sales blurbs, would tell heart-tugging tales explaining why they had to sell their Dalmatians at fire-sale prices, he says. The cons were cousins to those now in circulation, for example, where a man trapped in the Cairo airport promises to send you a check for $1,000, if only you will wire $350 so he can get a new passport.

PupyFind, Peters says, has since installed security software that makes such scams harder to perpetrate.

Miranda Furtado, 28, of Toronto, Canada, tells ABC she used PupyFind last November.

Edible marijuana a threat to pets

The self-described editor, guru and broadcaster--founder of a website that delivers sports news to women (BabesDigBalls.com)--says she had always wanted a French bulldog. She calls finding the right dog online a higher-risk proposition than online dating. "With a puppy, you're putting money down," she explains.

"I wasn't even sure the dog would show up."



But he did. And Elvis (so-named because he has a cleft lip) has since turned out to be "an amazing dog."

His lip was not a defect in Furtado's eyes, since it made him a cheaper buy than a Canadian bulldog would have been. "Here, they're really expensive."

Elvis is the best dog she has ever had, says Furtado. "I couldn't be happier."

But when writer Seth Adam Smith shared concerns over his impending marriage with his father, his advice proved to have mass appeal.

"You don't marry to make yourself happy, you marry to make someone else happy," Smith wrote in a blog post recounting his father's words.

"More than that, your marriage isn't for yourself, you're marrying for a family. Not just for the in-laws and all of that nonsense, but for your future children. Who do you want to help you raise them? Who do you want to influence them? Marriage isn't for you. It's not about you. Marriage is about the person you married."

By Thursday, four days after Marriage Isn't For You published, the post had received 24 million views, Smith said in a follow-up post on his blog. It led to a great deal of media coverage and TV appearances on the Today Show, Fox & Friends and more.

"Honestly, I thought that 5,000-10,000 clicks would have been a monumental accomplishment. So to see a number like 24 million is staggering, inspiring, overwhelming, and more than a little intimidating," Smith wrote in the post.

Although friendliness and enjoying one another is preferable, respectful tolerance does not constitute a failure on anyone's part. Divorce Movie Sends Powerful Message About Dating After Divorce | Jackie Pilossoph

I finally had a chance to see the movie Enough Said, a romantic comedy about dating after divorce with James Gandolfini (the last movie he made before he died) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Aside from the fact that it was a delightful, entertaining story, done with great taste, amazing writing and two top-notch actors, there was a message I felt the need to write about.

Almost always, divorced men and women go into dating after divorce with apprehension and fear. Yet, they are excited about the potential of meeting someone new and feeling those feelings of giddy love, lust, and being adored: the things they've been missing for so long. People dating after divorce go into it with jaded optimism, which is what James Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus are doing in the movie.

The premise of Enough Said is that Gandolfini and Dreyfus are dating, and in the meantime, one of Dreyfus's clients -- she is a massage therapist -- is Gandolfini's ex-wife. Dreyfus doesn't find this out for at least a few sessions, but when she makes the connection, she keeps it her secret. She doesn't tell either one, and continues both relationships. Why? Because she's pumping her client for information about her boyfriend.

This plot to me was genius. Think about it. If you are dating someone who is divorced, there's always a fear in the back of your mind, regardless of what he or she told you about why they got divorced, that there is something you are missing, and that it is really bad. You only hear THEIR side of the story.

When I was first dating my boyfriend (several years ago), I used to tell my friends (and him, actually) that I wish I could get stuck in an elevator with his ex-wife so that I could ask her why they got divorced. I wanted to hear HER side of the story. Maybe there was something I didn't know. Maybe he punched her once. Maybe he cheated on her. Maybe he stole money from her. You will only know as much about your boyfriend or girlfriend and about their divorce as they decide to share. What I've come to realize is that my obsessive need to know everything came from self-doubt and my inability to trust my gut.

If you are divorced person dating, you've already made one mistake and you don't want to make another, so you become skeptical and you might second guess everything. Divorced people dating might even look for things, look for a way out. In other words, you can't believe someone divorced your guy (or girl), so there's got to be a catch, right? There's got to be something wrong if someone else let him go.

Although understandable to have these guarded feelings, feelings of self-doubt and of doubting the relationship, people dating after divorce at some point must open their hearts, let the wall down and truly embrace the person they are with, almost as if it was the first time -- like they were never married and divorced. I'm not saying not to be wise and not to look for red flags at the beginning of the relationship. What I am saying is that if you fall in love and decide you want a commitment with someone, you either trust your guy (or girl) or you don't. There is no in-between. And if you don't, then it isn't right.

We are all scared shi*less in this dating after divorce world, let's be honest. Yet, there's no better feeling than knowing there's a potential to meet someone who will truly make you feel loved and happy. And the only way to do that is to let go of the baggage from your last marriage and trust. Have faith in your partner -- you don't need to uncover every detail of his or her failed marriage. Have faith in the relationship, the love and trust and loyalty you have for each other, and have faith in yourself -- that comes with accepting and learning from your past mistakes, along with self-assurance and self-love.

I won't tell you how Enough Said ends, I will just say that I think every divorced person dating should see it. It sends a powerful message, which is that trust and loyalty are at the core of every successful relationship.

As reported in the new Us Weekly, Brown, 22, and Rihanna, 24, have been hooking up in secret for nearly a year -- despite both his February 2009 assault of Rihanna and his present relationship with Tran, 23.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf would not comment directly on the tapes, but said "the United States and Poland have an incredibly strong relationship ... based on shared values.

"It's a key part of our alliances in that part of the world. And the crisis in Ukraine, I think, has made that even more the case, where we're confronting a shared threat together," Harf said.
